Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages In Britain

England has one of the longest histories of multi-culturism on the planet, and our country is home to people from nearly every country in the world. To be granted citizenship in England, an applicant needs to have a grasp of the English language however it is common for them to have very little knowledge of English. It is extremely hard to integrate with the rest of society if you cannot hold a conversation with anyone outside your own circle. Why bother moving to England if you are only going to communicate with your family?

Whilst some may view this as extreme, English should be known by everyone living here no matter where they originally came from so that we can fully communicate our similarities and differences. TESOL teachers can help children and adults to get a better understanding of the English language, so that they can become a part of society and not alien to it.

Teaching English to speakers of other languages is a gratifying and skilful job to do. Whilst you do not need to be a qualified teacher, to be able to teach English to immigrants you need to be of graduate level. If you want to work in the private sector, it is possible to be a TESOL teacher without a degree but only if you have an excellent understanding of the language. To be able to work in a government funded school in the UK you will need a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). With a lot of subjects oversubscribed for teachers like English and history, there is a good chance of securing a job as a TESOL teacher for young graduates.

With better job opportunities and the chance to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures on a daily basis, teaching English to speakers of other languages is a career full of opportunities.
